What is co-insurance?

Co-Insurance is the client’s out of pocket participation after meeting the deductible. Typically, it is 10% of the remaining and subsequent expenses. If these copays add up to $40,000 pesos, the client will pay no more copays on those conditions. This is called the copay limit and, in most cases, we have a $40,000 peso copay limit on our policies.

Of course your health is very important. It is also very important to work with an experienced and licensed health insurance broker familiar with the insurance contracts and underwriting requirements to explain options to you and present as complete an application to underwriters as possible.

Contact us and we will gladly review your current insurance policy. If you do not have one, we will design one to suit you.

Do the policies cover pre-existing medical conditions?

The short answer is no, but there are exceptions. Health insurance Policies are subject to underwriting during the application process. This means that the insurance company evaluates the client’s medical history and, in most cases, pre-existing medical conditions and treatments are excluded.

The applications are all evaluated case by case and each insurer may proceed differently on their pre-existing conditions restrictions. Here are some of the possible exceptions:

a) GeoBlue covers pre-existing conditions but their premiums are typically $10,000 USD plus per year.

b) Mapfre can remove the exclusion on the condition after two years if it meets certain criteria of stability through this period.

c) Plan Seguro may cover pre-existing Hypertension or Diabetes if the rest of your health profile is excellent including Body Mass Index.

d) Other companies are open to evaluate the exclusion during the policy renewal if medication is taken off and/or the health improved.

Guarantees of payment when entering the hospital

While your health insurance Policy will make direct Payments to the hospital for any medical emergency covered in your policy, it is important to understand the hospital’s procedure during the admission. When you enter the hospital, your insurance card will be used to identify your insurer and contact information. We recommend having the card in your wallet always.

In most cases, the hospital will ask you to leave a guarantee of payment. This is typically a credit card where they retain a portion of the estimated charges until they receive the specific coverage approval from the company for your treatment. This is required by the hospital so they have a guarantee they will receive payment should the client’s policy be inactive, expired or in case the coverage is excluded due to an undeclared preexisting condition in the policy.

For this reason, we recommend our clients to have a credit/debit card with an available limit of at least $3,000 dollars. Should you have a medical emergency, the deposit will be available to avoid a delay in hospital admission. Once the hospital treatment is finished the hospital will only charge your deductible.

Do I Need Mexico Auto Insurance?

If you will be driving an Auto in Mexico with foreign license plates, you need to know that the vehicle insurance coverage you rely on a daily basis at home does not protect you once you cross the international border. As the US State Department advises on its web site:

U.S. automobile liability insurance is not valid in Mexico, nor is most collision and comprehensive coverage issued by U.S. companies. Motor vehicle insurance is considered invalid in Mexico if the driver is found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Some US and Canadian auto insurance policies may state that they extend collision coverage for your vehicle on infrequent, short distance trips into Mexico, as on trips under 25 miles from the border. But in the event of injury to others or damage to another person’s property, please know that Mexican authorities do not recognize auto insurance policies from companies located outside Mexico. Therefore, you must purchase temporary Mexican auto insurance.

Mexico requires Mexican vehicle liability insurance from a Mexico-domiciled insurance provider.

Novamar Insurance Mexico can provide Mexican liability insurance for your auto, van, RV, truck or motorcycle registered outside Mexico. Except for motorhomes or RVs, our policies give you more than liability coverage!

Mexico Auto Insurance Tourist Policy Features

Policy features for personal-use vehicles registered outside Mexico, while traveling in Mexico:
Note: for motorhomes and RV’s, only liability coverage is available

  • Collision and upset/material damage
  • Total loss
  • Third party liability
  • Medical coverage per passenger
  • Legal assistance
  • Roadside assistance
  • Theft

When you obtain your quote or your policy for vehicle liability coverage, you may be asked to supply the value of your vehicle. In advance of getting your quote, it may be handy for you to get an estimate of its value online. Please refer to NADAguides.com for your official estimate of value. Another piece of information you will need may require a trip out to check your vehicle. You will need your vehicle identification number (VIN). The easiest place to find this information is on the vehicle itself, but it can also be found on your vehicle’s registration document. You will not regret later a few minutes spent now checking that the number on your registration matches the number on the vehicle.

Limitations and Restrictions

Our Mexican auto insurance for tourists is available throughout Mexico, subject to these limitations:

  • Only for Canadian or US registered personal-use vehicles
  • Coverage is valid only for citizens or residents of Canada or USA
  • Driver must have a valid driver’s license
  • Coverage effective only within Mexico

Mexican Boat Full Coverage

For Americans and Canadians living in Mexico, we are pioneering delivery of quality English-language service—with policy translations in English—and we provide full-coverage boat insurance in Mexico.

Types of Boat Insurance:

Quality Coverage, Years of Experience. When distinguishing between boat and yacht, we use boat to describe vessels up to 26 feet L.O.A. and yachts to describe vessels 27 feet L.O.A. and longer. Otherwise, we often use boats in a generic sense in reference to vessels which are not ships. While the specialty of writing insurance for recreational vessels is properly called providing yacht insurance, most people look for boat insurance.
